A local SEO checklist is a step-by-step list of actions that help your business appear in Google Maps and local search results when people nearby search for what you offer. For UK small businesses, the most important steps are a fully optimised Google Business Profile, consistent business details across the web, a steady flow of genuine reviews, and location-focused pages on your website.

Work through the 20 steps below in order. Each one builds on the last, and together they cover the signals Google uses to decide which local businesses to show.

Part 1: Google Business Profile Setup and Optimisation

  1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Use your exact real-world business name, without adding keywords or locations that are not part of it.
  2. Choose the most accurate primary category. This is one of the strongest local ranking factors. Add relevant secondary categories too.
  3. Add your address or service area correctly. If customers visit you, show your address. If you travel to customers, set a service area and hide the address.
  4. Complete every section. Opening hours, phone number, website, services, products, attributes and a keyword-rich but natural business description.
  5. Upload real photos regularly. Your premises, team, vehicles and completed work build trust far better than stock images.

We cover the profile in much more detail in our guide to Google Business Profile optimisation.

Part 2: Consistent Business Details (NAP) Across the Web

  1. Decide on one official version of your name, address and phone number (NAP) and use it everywhere, down to abbreviations like “Rd” or “Road”.
  2. Add your NAP to your website footer and contact page.
  3. List your business on key UK directories such as Yell, Thomson Local, FreeIndex, Scoot, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
  4. Add industry-specific directories, for example trade bodies, Checkatrade-style platforms or professional associations relevant to your sector.
  5. Find and fix old or incorrect listings, especially if you have moved or changed phone number.

Part 3: Reviews and Reputation

  1. Ask every happy customer for a Google review, using a short direct link sent by email or text.
  2. Reply to every review, positive and negative, politely and professionally.
  3. Never buy or fake reviews. It breaks Google’s rules and, in the UK, fake reviews are also covered by consumer protection law.
  4. Show genuine testimonials on your website alongside the customer’s name and business where they agree to it.

Part 4: On-Page Local SEO on Your Website

  1. Put your town or city in key title tags and headings, for example “Plumber in Burnley | Emergency Repairs”.
  2. Create a dedicated page for each core service rather than listing everything on one page.
  3. Build location pages for areas you genuinely serve, with unique content about each area, local projects and testimonials. Avoid copying the same text and swapping the town name.
  4. Add LocalBusiness schema markup with your name, address, phone, opening hours and service area.
  5. Embed a Google Map on your contact page and make your phone number tap-to-call on mobile.

Part 5: Local Authority and Links

  1. Earn links from local organisations. Sponsor local events or clubs, join your chamber of commerce, partner with complementary local businesses and share useful local content that local news sites want to reference.
